Dubai's importance as commercial pole in the late 19th and 20th centuries is related to two specific aspects not necessarily found elsewhere: being a free trade zone and an international pole for the sale of rare and precious goods, like pearls and gold.
Its commercial significance at the regional scale is still well established notwithstanding the economic, technical and social evolution and transformation the region witnessed in the last 50 years.
At the architectural level, one of the most striking element of the site are its wind-towers, a traditional technical feature answering to the harsh climatic conditions of the region that can be found in most historic settlements of Iran and of the Arabian Peninsula with specificities and differences according to the region and the epoch.
The World Heritage Site of Ad-Dir'iyah in Saudi Arabia shows vestiges of very high and partially standing wind catchers; these towers built in mud bricks, however, are substantially different from the ones found in Eastern Gulf region.
Closer examples are found in major Persian architectural sites in the central Iranian plateau and notably in the city of Yazd.
The traditional neighbourhoods of old Dubai, however, represent the most coherent remain of an urban district with wind-tower on the Arabian side of the Gulf.
While this architectural element can be found in isolated, preserved houses also in Manama Bahrain , in Kuwait City and in Doha Qatar , only in Dubai this traditional element still characterizes entire urban sectors like Shindagha and Bastakia neighbourhood.

Umm Al Quwain. Ras Al Khaimah. Abu Dhabi. Kuwait City. West Bank. When trade with the outside world began over a century ago, this protected inlet was the obvious choice to develop a commercial seaport.
The creek has been widened many times during the last century, and today, it's often busy with abra—small wooden water taxis—ferrying passengers between the souks of Deira on the northeastern bank and the historic district of Bur Dubai on the southwestern bank.
The Basics. While water taxis are often included as part of guided sightseeing tours and serve as a practical way to see the sights of Dubai Creek while getting from Point A to Point B, the waterway can also be enjoyed via a sunset dinner cruise aboard a traditional Arabian wooden sailboat known as a dhow.
Take your Dubai Creek experience up a notch with a dinner dhow cruise. Handicap accessibility is not guaranteed on creek tours.
There are four stations where travelers board water taxis—two on the Deira side and two on the Bur Dubai side.
From the creek, it's possible to spot palaces, mosques and other Dubai landmarks, including the Gold Souk and the Dubai Heritage Village.
If visiting on your own, arrive in the early morning or evening to enjoy some peaceful moments, or during the hectic middle of the day to see bustling life all around you.
Dhows are wooden boats with long, thin, hulls, typically used to carry heavy cargo for trading. Lateen-rigged sails on one or more masts help power the boats carrying fruit or fresh water.
Abras are the traditional motor-powered water taxis used in Dubai. Admission: Free. Filter Close. Time of Day Morning. Duration Up to 1 hour 7.

Wetland reserve in United Arab Emirates. I made a list of the named locations in both evaluation documents, and tried to find them on the ground using google maps and maps.
This mission ended in a lot of searching for the remnants of old neighbourhoods like Al Fahidi and Bastakia, and the Souk al Kabeer.
The 'largest Hindu temple of Dubai' must be in this area as well - but where? I did not manage to locate it. It turns out that a completely reconstructed 'new' old neighbourhood is being built on the banks of Dubai Creek.
Partly they are still working on it even on Friday, the 'Islamic Sunday' , but for the most part the buildings in old style are already standing.
This neighbourhood is dotted with museums, cultural centres, restaurants, boutiques and other tourist attractions. Much is not open yet. If you look very closely, you can still find fragments of something really old, such as a few meters of the old city wall.
